PT requested updates, we listened, we collaborate, we include

v1.5.0 Key Changes:

  • NPC (nonplayer characters, aka AI, aka robots) system in the City grid scene

    • Added 3,000 pedestrians in walkable areas, mainly sidewalks, and crosswalks.

    • Pedestrian optimization - Nearby pedestrians are made visible and distant pedestrians are removed from camera rendering to improve performance.

  • How they work:

    • Pedestrians have a simple life, they will walk at a constant speed chasing a waypoint, yet never really finding it!

    • Their brains are limited yet capable of avoiding cars

    • If a car is in their path on the way to the waypoint, they will move to avoid it (cars currently don't offer the same respect)

  • Next Steps:

    • Give cars a smarter brain, so they don't run over pedestrians.

    • We are currently developing a system to inform cars (and school buses) that a Pedestrian is near, to allow them to proactively adapt.

    • Add a behavior rule for pedestrians to not walk through crosswalks with the light on green.

    • Develop a system to randomly adjust human shapes, skin color, age, size, etc.

  • Notes:

    • v1 of improved pedestrian AI system, based on PTs feedback request
